Last year, two from SEANC families received national awards
Being a member of SEANC not only benefits you, it can help your loved ones pursue their career goals through various scholarship programs.
Because of SEANC’s affiliation with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), members and their spouses and children are eligible to compete for more than 50 SEIU scholarships. The application process for awards is now under way, with a deadline of March 1.
Last year, college-bound children of two SEANC members received SEIU’s Lottery Scholarships. David Morrison, son of District 8 member Milton Morrison, received one of 15 $1,000 renewable SEIU awards to use toward his tuition at N.C. State University, while Tyler Chapman, son of District 66 member Rosa Chapman, received one of 33 $1,500 nonrenewable scholarships to use toward his tuition at Morehouse College.
In order to qualify for SEIU’s Lottery Scholarships, winners of which are chosen at random, applicants must pass a quiz on the 2010 SEIU Annual Report. The renewable awards are open to 2012 high school or GED graduates who will enroll in a two- or four-year college or technical school. The nonrenewable awards are open to undergraduate students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year.
In addition to the 48 lottery scholarships, SEIU also administers four competitive scholarship programs. These programs have specific criteria for applicants to meet in the concentrations of the visual and performing arts, economic and social justice and health care.
Also, SEANC offers its own scholarship program, and the deadline for applying is April 15. For more information on these awards, contact Renee Vaughan at rvaughan@seanc.org.
